From the Back Cover
Choose the right ARM Cortex-M architecture for your application and learn how to program your applications in C The Designer’s Guide to the Cortex-M Family gives you an easy-to-understand introduction to the concepts required to develop programs in C with a Cortex-M based microcontroller. The book begins with an overview of the Cortex-M family, giving architectural descriptions supported with practical examples, enabling you to easily develop basic C programs to run on the Cortex-M0/M0+/M3 and M4 and M7. It then examines the more advanced features of the Cortex architecture such as memory protection, operating modes and dual stack operation. Once a firm grounding in the Cortex-M processor has been established the book introduces the use of a small footprint RTOS and the CMSIS-DSP library. The Designers guide also examines techniques for software testing and code reuse specific to Cortex-M microcontrollers. New to this edition: Updated to include the latest version (5) of MDK-ARM, which introduces the concept of using software device packs and software components Overviews of the new CMSIS specifications Coverage of developing software with CMSIS-RTOS showing how to use RTOS in a real world design A new chapter on the Cortex-M7 Architecture covering all the new features A new chapter covering Test driven development for Cortex-M Microcontrollers A new chapter on creating software components with CMSIS-Pack and device abstraction with CMSIS-Driver A new chapter providing an overview of the ARMv8-M Architecture including the TrustZone hardware security model. With this book you will learn: The key differences between the Cortex-M0/M0+/M3 and M4 and M7 How to write C programs to run on Cortex-M based processors How to make the best use of the CoreSight debug system The Cortex-M operating modes and memory protection Advanced software techniques that can be used on Cortex-M microcontrollers How to use a Real Time Operating System with Cortex-M devices How to optimize DSP code for the Cortex-M4 and how to build real time DSP systems

About the Author
Trevor Martin graduated from Brunel University in 1988 with an Honors degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. In the same year he began work as a Junior Hardware engineer at Philips Medical Systems. He joined Hitex in 1992 as a Technical specialist for 8 Bit Microcontroller development tools. This included the 8051,68HC11\05\08 microcontrollers. He also gained experience with networking protocols such as CAN,USB and TCP/IP. Since 2000 he has been supporting ARM based microcontrollers, initially ARM7 and ARM9 CPU then moving to Cortex-M processor. To promote these devices he has worked closely with both NXP and ST and also TI and Freescale to a lesser extent. Since 2005 he has written a number of „Insiders Guide‟ Books which are introductory tutorials to ARM based microcontroller families such as LPC2000, STR9 and STM32. He also runs regular training courses, a general Cortex Microcontroller workshop and also device specific courses.

I find this book to be a practicle, and well written, introduction to the CORTEX M3/M4. In my case, I have the older Keil MCBSTM32, which is based on the STMicro STM32103RBT6 microcontroller and ended up purchaseing both the first and 2nd editions of this book. Seems expensive, but the first edition had a great intoduction to Keil MDK_v4, which is now the Keil MDK_v5; both can bee downloaded for free on the Keil web site (described in the book) in a code sied limited edition. I am a purest and wanted to see the history of how the keil compiler is used to get a better idea of what the option do and why they exists. I ended up purchaseing the Keil annual subscription so I can use the code commercially, and I do not regret it. It is a good IDE. Secondly, it used the ARM assembler. That's imporatant for me because I also own a commercial version of the Rowley and Associates Crossworks for ARM. I want to be well versed in both ARM and GNU assembly language. Most will probably not be in this situation and will most likely benifit from the second edition of the book. In the second edition, the STMicro ST32F7 Discovery book is used. The second edition ahs the same flow as the first with the projects updated for the Keil MDK V5 and ST32F7 Discovery board. I use severl variants of ST, TI, NXP, and ATMEL/Microchip ARM CORTEX devices. This book would appeal to those that use STMicro. Those that use the other variants (ie TI, NXP, etc) may not get as much value, but I do not want to discourage; just be aware that this book is geared towards ST and Keil. That said, it does a straight forwad job of describing the AMR CORTEX M3/M4 architecture with good examples, so you may be able to adapt the examples to your environment (ie no-keil, or even Keil with a difference SoC vender)? In short, your mileage may vary if not using ST/Keil.Note that in the first edition, the Author mentions "Hardware Examples". These do not seem to exist on the Elseivier web site. I was able to get by without them, but would have like to have them none-the-less wo see if there is anything I am missing.
