A worldview in general is-how we make sense of the world as it is.Where did we come from? How should we live? What happens when we die? How we answer questions like this will help to reveal our worldview. The author gives this definition of worldview p.7 "...a worldview is a well reasoned framework of beliefs and convictions that gives a true and unified perspective on the meaning of human existence."What we really believe in the core of our being determines how we live-whether we have clearly thought through it(or can clearly express it)or not. Mr.Ryken writes p.8 "Even people who say they do not believe in God have ultimate commitments ...whatever is ultimate for us shapes our total identity."Why is it important for Christians to have and live out a Biblically based Christian worldview?Philip Graham Ryken believes that the Church will fail to have a transforming influence on their culture where this is lacking.God has revealed Himself ,and who we are in relation to Him and the world He has created. He quotes Francis Schaffer writing about God's revealed truth p.15"...truth about reality, not just about religious things.Biblical Christianity is truth concerning total reality."-In order to understand and make sense out of the world in which we live,we must know the God who has made it and what He has revealed about Himself and His creation.Without that we only have our vain and futile imaginations(and those of our fellow creatures)to try and sort out what is really important and how to live in the light of that. Some wrongly think that the Bible is our guide only in religious matters but the Word of God is to light our way in all things ,in this dark and sinful world. Those whose worldview leave out God must ultimately lead to despair and a life that has no meaning or purpose(or whose meaning and purpose terminate in this short life). The author writes p.18" we did not make ourselves ,and thus we cannot define our own identity." As much as the carnal man wants to shake off his creature hood and define who he is(apart from God)all such attempts will end in futility and those who do so will not escape the judgment of God for such wickedness(unless they ultimately submit to God's revealed truth about who He is, and the only way of escape that He has provided for fallen sinful men). The doctrine of creation is an important and foundational truth of Christianity.Evolutionary thought not only strikes at what God has made but attacks the very being and existence of God.Pastor Ryken asserts p.18 "Human beings are not the random result of molecules in motion;we are the crown of creation...". One of the clear evidences that man is the height of God's creation is that he is created in God's image(he is a moral, spiritual, rational and intelligent being).Evolutionary thinking is an expos'e of mans folly and rebellion against the omnipotent creator, sustainer and ruler of all things. It is important to think through what our world and life view is.Is our worldview defined by Biblical parameters? The better we understand the Christian worldview, the more effectively we will be able to interact with those who have a less than Biblical(for professing Christians)or a world and life view that does not accord with reality at all. This booklet by Philip Graham Ryken is an excellent introduction to help one think through what their worldview is and compare to a Christian view of this world.
A very concise synopsis of the concept of the Christian worldview - Creation, Fall, Grace and Glory. Ryken notes that few born-again Christians actually think from a biblically-defined worldview and even fewer teenagers espouse biblical principles in their daily lives and decision-making. This booklet addresses not only the need for a biblical worldview, but also gives a brief description of each element and well as its biblical and historical support. The essence of the book is that life is created, and thus defined, by God and not man. As naturalism continues to invade our schools, far too many followers of Christ are unable to distinguish between the wisdom of man and the truth of God's Word. Ryken does a nice job of addressing each element of the Christian worldview, describing how it shapes the way we should think and how we must also act in accordance to the revealed truth of Scripture. This book would be a great read for those who don't have a good comprehensive understanding of Scripture and how it relates to life, especially those areas where biblical truth and the wisdom of man collide in the culture. Understanding God's original design, the damaging results of the fall, and God's work to redeem His creation which will end in His glory is underappreciated in today's watered-down version of Christianity. This entire series of booklets are a great reminder of the historical Christian faith, grounded in God's Word and centered on Christ.
With endnotes, this booklet is 48-pages long but an excellent introduction to worldview, focusing on the distinction between God and his creation, and the storyline of the Bible (Creation-Fall-Grace-Glory, which is similar to Creation-Fall-Redemption-New Creation). There are plenty of ideas to pursue through the bibliographical notes and suggested reading. Very readable and relevant, easily used in a one-on-one conversation or a seminar. Great way to unpack what it means to live for God's glory as we hope in his promises.
An excellent primer on the Christian faith. I was expecting a thicker book but after having read it, I thought it covered the topic pretty well. Although I would like to keep it, I think it is best shared with others so I am going to give it away.
This book is very similar to Ryken's other book, but is still worth the read as he outlines his four pillars: creation, fall, grace and glory.
The writer is spot on with doctrine of the Bible, the book is easy to read, the message is presented in terms that are understandable.
If you are looking to read a book which teaches the salient points of the Christian Worldview - look no more. Ryken starts by defining the Christian Worldview as, "the comprehensive framework of our basic belief about all things..." The book is realistic in it's approach as to why we need a Christian or Biblical Worldview - "For every ten men in your church, nine will have kids who leave the church, eight will not find their job satisfying, six pay the minimum on their credit card balances, five have a major problem with pornography, four will get divorced, and only one has the biblical worldview."Ryken explains that "God doesn't have a point of view, he has a complete view." The only complete one might I add. The author walks the reader through the fall and explains that "the only way to glorify God completely is to obey him absolutely." He pulls no punches.I especially enjoyed the chapter on the Creation and Cultural mandates. Reminded me of time spent studying under the late Charles Colson. The book ends with a wonderful description of Revelation. Important to understand as "we are living somewhere between the sufferings of the cross and the joy of the empty tomb."Trust me, you will love this short, easy to read book on the Biblical Worldview. Blessings.
